After losing an appeal in British courts, Christopher Tappin was extradited from the U.K. and brought to the U.S. on February 24th. Mr. Tappin, a British businessman, faces charges in connection with a scheme to illegally export parts used in Hawk surface-to-air missile systems to Iran. On March 5th, a United States federal grand jury indictment was handed down. Mr Tappin was charged with one count each for: conspiracy to illegally export defense articles, aiding and abetting the illegal export of defense articles, and conspiracy to conduct illegal financial transactions. If convicted, Mr. Tappin faces up to 20 years in prison.

President Obama recently signed an executive order, establishing the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center (ITEC) within the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). The Obama administration is aimed at doubling exports by the year 2015, and this new agency will help facilitate that goal.

Senior sourcing executives have been barraged on all fronts with the word “collaboration” and prophets spewing the need to “collaborate” in order to achieve success. Overused – maybe. Improperly used or explained – definitely. The “with who”, and “why” and more importantly “how” to collaborate are questions still not clearly defined. So we are setting out to set it straight.

An Inbound Logistics article in October 2003, “Understanding Incoterms,” does an excellent job of explaining the concept of Incoterms, why they are necessary and how they work. We’d like to bring this article up-to-date with a discussion of the changes to Incoterms that began in January 2011.
To recap, Incoterms are an internationally accepted set of standard commercial terms used between buyers and sellers - a critical component of global sourcing. The terms determine who pays the cost of each transportation segment, who is responsible for loading and unloading of goods, and who bears the risk of loss at any given point during an international shipment.

Particularly among retailers with tens of thousands of SKUs and many hundreds of stores, there is a need for differentiated replenishment and logistics treatments across complex supply chains. For example, an organization may need supply chain processes that are specialized to goods with unpredictable demand, such as the latest fashion. The same organization may also provide goods with more predictable demand that require steady replenishment. Similarly, other goods may have higher import and export compliance requirements that must be carefully managed.
