Wind River Systems Agrees to Pay $750,000 Fine for Unauthorized Encryption Exports

Wind River Systems, a subsidiary of Intel Corporation, has agreed to pay a $750,000 civil penalty for unauthorized encryption exports. The Alameda, California, company was charged with selling encryption software products to foreign governments and organizations on the BIS Entity List, which requires specific license requirements to do business with those entities.

Global Trade Alert: Yemen Sanctions List Released

On November 10, 2014, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added names of specific entities subject to Executive Order 13611 to their Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list. Signed on May 16, 2012, E.O. 13611 declares a “national emergency to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Yemen and other individuals and entities that threaten Yemen’s peace, security, or stability.”

NAFTA Trade Continues Upswing in July 2014

According to the Bureau of Transportation, U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico rose for the fifth consecutive month in July of this year. From July 2013 to July 2014, the value of NAFTA increased from $7.9 billion to $10.1 billion.

Overall, freight increased in all modes of transportation by approximately 8%. The largest increases include:

  • Pipeline traffic (up 10.8%)
  • Rail freight (up 10%)
  • Truck freight (up 8.5%)

Germany’s Second-Largest Bank to Pay Settlement of $600-$800 Million for Violating Sanctions

Commerzbank AG, the second-largest bank in Germany, is expected to pay $600-$800 million in fines as restitution to the U.S as a result of their dealings with Iran and other nations under U.S. sanctions. The U.S. started looking into Commerzbank back in 2010 and has since found that the bank took down identifying information from incoming wires in an attempt to hide anything that would raise questions.
